Utah – Day 3

Our last big day in Utah – we spent the morning cleaning, packing and cooking up leftovers for breakfast, then hit up the Sunday Market right outside our window.  It was surprisingly big and had some cute stuff.  The most interesting place was the “make your own”  Bloody Mary stand:

From there, JJ & Mark broke off on their own, while BK, Dave, Trudy & I side-tripped over to Wyoming to visit Suzanne.  She literally lives right across the border, just off the first exit after the state line, so how could we not pop over while we were so close?

They had just moved into their new home yesterday so we were even their first guests!  It’s a great house – Suzanne will have fun decorating.  But Evanston is a small town – 12,000 I think.  Logan is big!  It was fun to hang out and catch up.

Eventually we drove back into Utah and down to SLC.  On a Sunday, it’s not easy to find someplace open for dinner.  Luckily, Red Rock Brewing was not only open but also serving beer ;-)   From there we cruised out to the Great Salt Lake because Trudy had never been there on any of her previous Utah trips.  The sun was setting so it was a nice field trip.

Afterwards, we dropped Trudy & Dave off at the airport and headed to our downtown digs, Little America, for the night…

Utah – Day 2

Another lazy morning and French toast feast in the awesome condo Trudy rented for all of us.  Afterwards, me, Trudy and JJ hopped on the chairlift right outside our door to ride up the mountain (yes, my second chair lift ride in less than six weeks!)  It was a beautiful day out but unfortunately up at the top of this particular lift there wasn’t much of a view as we dipped back down a bit into a valley.  There was however a bike race going on, the Park City Point 2 Point.  Only 300 riders climbing up and down the mountains here from resort to resort.  One of the volunteers told us the fastest person would do it in 7 hours, most in 11-12.  it looked grueling!  15,000 elevation gain through the ride – and it was hot out!  We decided to hike back down which was fun and actually didn’t take that long.

Back at the condo everyone began their preparations for the big game and then we were off!  We were able to take a route on the backside of the mountains to Provo and avoid Salt Lake which was nice, and found cheap parking pretty easily about 1/2 mile away.  It was hot out but with a 5:00pm kick-off I was hopeful the sun would drop at some point (and it did for our seats).  We were all very excited when the Huskies scored on their opening series, but unfortunately they lost to BYU in the end, 23-17.

It was a sad ride home, but then Dave fixed us up some yummy Pasta Carbonara before we all called it quits for the night.

Utah – Day 1

We had a lazy morning in Park City sleeping late, wandering for coffee and heading down the road for bagels.  Then in the afternoon I escaped on my own and headed north to see an old friend.

15 years ago I was a bridesmaid in Melani’s wedding, someone I met in college as she played on the basketball team while I was manager.  I haven’t seen her since her wedding!  craziness.  But we’ve kept in touch through her amazingly thorough Christmas letters each year and random emails.  Once I knew we were coming to Utah I made sure to get in touch so we could finally hook up.

As the mom of three of awesome kids our catch-up time mainly consisted of running errands for Kaden & Kody’s birthday party the next day and going to watch Kiley’s volleyball game, but it was great – I loved meeting her kids in person after seeing them grow up and pictures, and it was fun to watch Mel interact with them as Mom.  We did manage to escape for yummy Mexican dinner before I had to drive home though.  A super fun evening, and hopefully it won’t be another 15 years before we see each other again.

Cities visited post-Olympics:

I have a theory that it is great to visit a city right after they host an Olympics because everything is new & upgraded, with improved mass transit. Here's the ones I've made it to so far: Barcelona - Atlanta - Sydney - Athens - Salt Lake - Vancouver

For their complete and utter lack of logic and customer service, you should avoid frequenting these businesses: Cafe Venus * Mesa Grill * Swoon * Tacos Guaymas (Greenlake location) * Trophy Cupcakes
