Summer 2006

wow – clearly blogging is not for me, since I haven’t added anything to this site since last December.  But, apparently you can now have friends on here like MySpace, and I’ve received two invitations, which sent me here to see my site after so many months away.  I still like the concept, but after spending all day at work on my computer, I rarely get on my computer at home anymore, so I think updates will continue to be few and far between.  So, a semi-annual summer update:

1) Went to see Real Madrid Wednesday night with many friends.  David Beckham is just so darned cute – and he wears turquoise shoes!

2) Went the Faith Hill-Tim McGraw concert last night.  Very good, big spectacle.  The most annoying part was all the bows they kept taking though – just one is fine, maybe two, but seriously – just get back to singing…

3) Played in a mini-golf league – what we lacked in talent we made up for in style – check out the pics.  We finished 12th.

4) Much more success on the big golf course, but again, not due to any talent I posess.  Eleni, Jordan & I, along with friend Jesse, won the Lakeside Golf tourney – CRAZY!

5) Mar talked us into taking a six-week soccer class.  Fun most of the time – I just liked doing the drills.  Except for headers – those hurt!  My forehead was sore for a coupel days.  Soccer, not my sport though – clearly my gut instincts as a child were correct when all my coaches wanted me to play and I said no.

6) Heading to the Yurt today with Kelli, Lauren & Deanne.  Sadly no Sallie once again.  Will she ever get to the Yurt?

7) Parents have a new puppy, Izzi.  Very cute, very social.

8) Finally got my sisters handbags up for sale on eBay – they sold for big money and I shipped off the last one today – woo hoo!

I think those are the major highlights of the month.  Hopefully I’ll get to play volleyball a bit more with Lonnie & Tab now that the other sports are over.  And maybe I’ll update this more often (though I doubt it!)

Jury Duty

I spent most of last week on jury duty.  Most of you are probably now groaning and sending sympathy my way, but I actually get excited about jury duty.  I like being able to support the process.  I’ve been called twice before, but had yet to make it onto a jury.  However, I failed to read the fine print that said I could be there Tuesday-Friday, and this was going to be an especially busy week at work.  I thought it was only a couple days – and just my luck, I was there all week.  Oh well, at least I got paid ;-)

The first day was LOOOOONG and boring.  I spent it most of it reading The Bourne Ultimatum and talking to Scott, Heidi B-P’s husband.  Finally, around 3:30, I was called into a selection group for Judith Hightower’s courtroom.  There, 15 of us were grilled as group for an hour by the Judge before being released for the day.  In the morning, the prosecutor and defense council took their turns and just before lunch, six jurors were selcted – including myself, Juror #3.

After lunch, opening statements and testimony began.  This was a ridiculous case that never should have made it to a courtroom to begin with.  Technically it was an assault charge stemming from an argument between two feuding roommates, one of whom accused the other of putting moths in her cereal.  Testimony extended through the day and closing arguments brought us back again on Thursday, with our deliberation starting after lunch.  I thought it was pretty clear and that we would wrap up by the end of the day.  No such luck – a couple of my fellow jurors were really hung up on the varying levels of assault, and how offensive or not this incident had been.  As 4:30 neared I knew I was destined to return on Friday.

Friday morning, and no one’s minds had really changed.  Given that this was a criminal case, we needed a unanimous decision.  After another hour it was clear we weren’t going to get it, so we went to the Judge without a verdict.  A hung jury.  I couldn’t believe that I spent 4 long days of my life there to end in a hung jury.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I have not been very good about updating my blog!  Although it is not yet the new year, I am now resolving to write here more often as I have enjoyed reading the blogs of my buddies lately.  So, here’s my start:  Happy Thanksgiving!  After a tough year, I am especially thankful for all you near and dear, and for my new steady paycheck and excellent benefits package!  So, as the first of three 4-day weekends in the six weeks commences (yay!), I share with you a poem:

TWAS THE NIGHT OF THANKSGIVING, BUT I JUST COULDN’T SLEEP

I TRIED COUNTING BACKWARDS, I TRIED COUNTING SHEEP.

THE LEFTOVERS BECKONED – THE DARK MEAT AND WHITE

BUT I FOUGHT THE TEMPTATION WITH ALL OF MY MIGHT

TOSSING AND TURNING WITH ANTICIPATION

THE THOUGHT OF A SNACK BECAME INFATUATION.

SO, I RACED TO THE KITCHEN, FLUNG OPEN THE DOOR

AND GAZED AT THE FRIDGE, FULL OF GOODIES GALORE.

I GOBBLED UP TURKEY AND BUTTERED POTATOES,

PICKLES AND CARROTS, BEANS AND TOMATOES.

I FELT MYSELF SWELLING SO PLUMP AND SO ROUND,

‘TIL ALL OF A SUDDEN, I ROSE OFF THE GROUND.

I CRASHED THROUGH THE CEILING, FLOATING INTO THE SKY

WITH A MOUTHFUL OF PUDDING AND A HANDFUL OF PIE.

BUT, I MANAGED TO YELL AS I SOARED PAST THE TREES….

HAPPY EATING TO ALL – PASS THE CRANBERRIES, PLEASE.

MAY YOUR STUFFING BE TASTY, MAY YOUR TURKEY BE PLUMP.

MAY YOUR POTATOES ‘N GRAVY HAVE NARY A LUMP.

MAY YOUR YAMS BE DELICIOUS, MAY YOUR PIES TAKE THE PRIZE,

MAY YOUR THANKSGIVING DINNER STAY OFF OF YOUR THIGHS.

Satellite Night View of the World

Mar sent me this link awhile ago, and I think it’s really cool:

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0011/earthlights_dmsp_big.jpg

The image is a panoramic view of the world from the new space station.
It is a night photo with the lights clearly indicating the populated areas.

You can scroll East-West and North-South. Note that Canada’s population is almost exclusively along the U.S. border.  Moving east to Europe, there is a high population concentration along the Mediterranean Coast.  It’s easy to spot London, Paris, Stockholm and Vienna.  Check out the development of Israel compared to the rest of the Arab countries. Note the Nile River and the rest of the “Dark Continent”. After the Nile, the lights don’t come on again until Johannesburg. Look at the Australian Outback and the Trans-Siberian Rail Route.  Moving east, the most striking observation is the difference between North and South Korea. Note the density of Japan.

Happy New Year!

Hey everyone!  Happy New Year!  Welcome to my new space!  I was inspired by my friend Sara who has a blog and my friend Lonnie who posted his recent Ireland photos on an MSN space, so I decided to check it.  Who knows what will really happen here, but I’ve always wanted a place to post random things to share, so maybe this will be it.  We’ll see what develops!  In the meantime, I wish everyone all the best in 2005!

Love ya!

Cities visited post-Olympics:

I have a theory that it is great to visit a city right after they host an Olympics because everything is new & upgraded, with improved mass transit. Here's the ones I've made it to so far: Barcelona - Atlanta - Sydney - Athens - Salt Lake - Vancouver
